We're moving!

ANLA is moving to the Rasmuson Library. Over the next year the Archive will be transitioning from its current home in the Brooks Building to new space in the Rasmuson Library. We have already begun transferring archival documents and recordings to secure storage on the first floor of Rasmuson, and we have opened a new office on the second floor, adjacent to the Oral History Program and the Alaska and Polar Regions Archive. Over the next few months we'll be creating a public space next to the Alaska Collection on the second floor. This space will provide easy access to Alaska Native Language reference materials.

During the transition period our offline materials will be distributed between Rasmuson and Brooks, so be sure to check with ANLA staff if you have any questions or need assistance locating materials. Thanks for your patience during our move. Stay tuned for more information about our Grand Opening Celebration, scheduled for February 22, 2013.

Digital files offline October 13-14

Our archive file server will be offline for scheduled maintenance for a period of 36 hours during the weekend of October 13-14.

End Time:     Sunday October 14, 2012 21:00 AKDT

During this time users will still be able to search and browse our online catalog, but digital files will not be available for download.

New digital version of Petitot's 1876 Gwich'in dictionary available

Thanks to the efforts of Chris Cannon a new scan of Emile Petitot's 1876 comparative Gwich'in - Hare - Dene Sųłine dictionary is now available. While this manuscript has been available digitally from other sources, the low resolution of those scans can make it difficult to read. This version is sufficiently high-resolution to make the material more legible.

New version of Iñupiaq Dictionary available

The latest version of the North Slope Iñupiaq Dictionary, compiled by Edna Maclean, can be downloaded from the Archive as item IN(N)971M2011. This update includes a complete finderlist and also resolves font issues with previous versions.

New ANLA Logo

We are pleased to announce our new logo, created by UAF student Emily Kurpjuweit as part of a digital design class. The logo alludes to the well-known story of Raven stealing the sun. Recounted widely across many different Alaska Native languages, this story tells how Raven brought light to the world by stealing the sun in its beak.

Emily graduates from UAF this year. Congratulations!

Sealaska Heritage Insitute provides digital access to dictionaries

A while back I mentioned the publication of several new dictionaries by Sealaska Heritage Institute. I'm now happy to report that SHI is making digital versions in PDF format available for free download.

Alutiiq Dictionary updates

Updates to the Alutiiq Dictionary have been posted at item SU972L2011. The updates are in a tagged lexical file format, consisting of three text files for main entries, postbases, and enclitcs. These are raw files which can be used to feed into lexical database software such as Toolbox, Fieldworks, or TshwaneLex. The files will eventually feed into production of a printed Alutiq dictionary as part of the IPY Documenting Alaskan and Neighboring Languages project.
